    Anal Glands

Dogs commonly do not experience any complications with their anal glands throughout their lifespan. Typically, during bowel movements, dogs naturally expel anal gland fluid, effectively expressing their glands. Additionally, dogs may involuntarily express their anal glands when feeling frightened or stressed.

The act of self-expression of the anal glands allows a dog to mark its territory near its residence or within its yard during regular defecation. When dogs socialize, they gather vital hormone-related information about each other by sniffing the hind ends and anal glands of their counterparts.

Nonetheless, there are occasions where these glands may become full, impacted, or infected. Impacted or diseased anal glands can inflict discomfort; therefore, it is crucial to identify the indications of an issue and be aware of the appropriate actions to take. If signs of anal gland disease persist, it is advisable to promptly contact a veterinarian to schedule an examination for your dog.

We advise not to have your dogs’ anal glands expressed unless advised by your veterinarian. Once you begin expressing the glands manually, the dog is less likely to do it on their own, which can lead to any number of issues.
